  1736 GERMAN SALTGLAZE STONEWARE £SOLD
A rare 18th Century Saltglaze Stoneware Tankard or STIEN as I think it would preferred to be called. The banded form a standard style in northern Europe including England is decorated with a white slip around the top bands. I believe this may be German or one of the low countries like Belgium or Holland

It retains its original pewter lid with ball shape thumb piece . The top possibly having owners initials AW lightly engraved to it the underside having a dated 1736 Touch mark of the maker.

Height of the mug ( without mounts) is 6 5/8 inch 17 cm.

Condition very good for its age. No cracks or restoration. Chip to foot rim and minor nibbles to rim

Old collection numbers written on base.
