FREEDOM FIRST of AUGUST 1838

£SOLD

FREEDOM FIRST of AUGUST 1838 £SOLD
Rare Blue Printed bowl, Central image features an African family outside a small cottage with a father and son dancing and a mother kneeling next to a child while gesturing with her hand to the flag flying in the distance reading "Liberty". Text references the 'Slavery Abolition Act' abolishing slavery across the British empire in 1838.
The abolition of slavery was protracted. Slavery was abolished in British Caribbean colonies from 1834, though slaves were forced to undertake a further 4 year period of apprenticeship before they were finally freed. The achievement of freedom is thus dated from 1 August 1838.
