HORNCASTLE VOLUNTEERS 1806

£895

  HORNCASTLE VOLUNTEERS 1806 £895
Important creamware jug, attributed to Rainforth & Co, Yorkshire, used in the recruitment of the Horncastle Volunteers 1806.
With the prospect and desire of Napoleon to invade England there was a movement to form volunteer groups throughout the country . It would appear that the Horncastle troop was formed prior to 1804 when they were addressed by there Chaplin who was dismayed that so many were resigning "after putting the country to the expense of supplying them with clothing and arms, having also pledged themselves to the country's defence and received in return exemption from militia service" " at a time when we are in danger of reduced to a French province." He reminds them that they (the Horncastrians) had been "among the first in the country to offer their services. A number of public meetings were called as well a "Court of Enquiry" for those who had resigned . In time it became in 1860 The 1st Battalion of the Lincolnshire Volunteers .

Provenance William Marshal Collection.
