A very rare incised named and dated slipware barrel from Sussex,. The classic red clay body has bands of yellow slip around each end to look like the willow on a wooden barrel. Around the stopper at the top we have the initials RN incised into the clay, below this the date 1842. This form of decoration is characteristic of the Sussex potters around Rye.

Length 15 cm.

Condition extensively damaged , cracked at one end. unrestored.
