RARE 15th Century ROOF FIGURE OF A NUN.

£SOLD

RARE 15th Century ROOF FIGURE OF A NUN. £SOLD
A very rare 15th Century carved figure of a nun, with a somewhat unhappy face, I guess looking down on everyone has that effect on you.
It is interesting to reflect that roof figures offer the greatest number of Medieval works of art still in there original location, because well they are very difficult to get to. it is rare to see one close up were the features may appear somewhat bold and crude or naïve and charming, with little fine detail, that would not be seen anyway in their original location.
Probably Northern Europe Low countries. First half of the 15th Century.
Walnut.
I believe she was always a half figure, the extensive worm is apparent throughout and includes the historic repair to her side and along her left arm, possibly a joint. The base again is later.
Total height just under 60 cm.
