MARY MAGHEE 1844, Grennock, Scotland

£SOLD

MARY MAGHEE 1844, Grennock, Scotland £SOLD
A delightful small red school sampler by Mary Maghee in 1844, I love how she calls herself "a poor child" . It is possible that Mary born in 1830, worked her sampler in the Scottish town of Greenock.
She married at the age of 16 to James Cable a well travelled seaman (promoted to Mate in 1852 then Master in 1858) His mother died in St.Kitts & Nevis in 1854 and brother in Echuca Victoria Australia in 1889, He died in Trinidad in 1887. I feel Mary possibly had quite a lonely life, but is remembered for her sampler .
Original Rosewood frame measuring 23.5 x 28 cm.
Condition good.
