  IRON TWIST CANDLE STICK. £68
Although many of the books on early lighting have these as English and 18th century, most are in fact French. They were made from the mid 18th century and well into the 19th by the local blacksmith. The wrought iron worked into a spiral in-which they place a raiser that can be worked up as the candle burns down. The base of turned wood. In France they are called Rat Tailed candlesticks, and in the USA they are known as Courting candlesticks, the father of a young woman placing the raiser up to a position, when the candle burns down it is time for the suitor to leave.

In this case we have a soft wood base possibly beach wood it lacks its original raiser .
