AN EARLY VICTORIAN NEEDLEWORK INDIAN SCHOOL SAMPLER by CATHERINE DAVIES AND RUTH worked with polychrome silks on a linen ground, in cross stitch, with alphabets and three verses, inscribed 'Marked by Catherine Davies ad Ruth for Miss tucker on her departure from India and presented by them in the name of all Mrs Schaffters Scholars. January 1840',
in a later glazed ebonised frame 42 x 33cm. Numerous small holes.

Mrs Schaffter was the wife of Paul Pacifque Schafftler, a Lutheran clergyman, who arrived in Madras India in 1827 for the church Missionary Society. He was given the Northern Tinnevelly area in Sothern India, where Mrs Schaffter set up the first girls boarding school, with the help from Mrs Pettis, another was started at Palamcottah, and later at Nalloor "employing" some 46 teachers by the 1840s .
Miss Sarah Tucker (off this sampler )the sister of the Reverend John Tucker , also a missionary with the CMS. wrote in her published South Indian Missionary sketches that "Friends at Hastings have contributed to Mrs Pettitts and Mrs Schaffters school supporting a little girl at Nalloor.
In 1836 a Miss Craven was sent out to Madras to work under the instruction of Miss Tucker, who was y record of this sampler left India in 1840.
It is interesting that the sampler follows an English style , with the girls expressing their gratitude that they do not suffer the plight of the poor and starving who have to beg from door to door. Now since the Schools aim was to teach Christianity and convert the Tamul Hindoo girls it is probable that Catharine Davis and Ruth were Indian.
