ELEANOR JANE HILTON Aged 9 1835

£SOLD

  ELEANOR JANE HILTON Aged 9 1835 £SOLD
Eleanor Jane Hilton Aged 9 1835.
A classic 19th century small school room sampler.
Eleanor was born 9th Feb.1826 in the village of Sarre in Kent. The daughter of John Hilton the vicar of the historic St. Nicholas church. Aged 25 she married the wonderfully named Rennell Francis Wynn Molesworth who became the curate of Betteshanger Church in nearby Northbourne. Like so many women at the time it would appear she died in childbirth aged 36 in 1862, the surviving daughter being named after her, they had 5 other children.
I love samplers like this that lead us into their lives, in this case of well todo families connected via the church but still touched by the same tragedies of poorer folk.
