WHITEWORK, Mid to late 17th century. £SOLD
It is always a pleasure to be able to offer a very affordable 17th century sampler.
This classic small whitework, is conventional in style and repertoire showing a high degree of skill. These samplers are generally not the work of a young child but that of an older girl or young woman.
Six bands of white linen thread in double hem, counted satin and other stitches followed by a deep band of cut and drawn work with hollie point and needle lace filling stitch. The last two bands of both whitework and drawn work remain unfinished as is the bottom band that contains just the letter W or M .
English circa 1660-1700.
only 12 x 33 cm.
