CODNOR PARK, DENBY BOG BOWL, Signed & dated 1860

£195

CODNOR PARK, DENBY BOG BOWL, Signed & dated 1860 £195
A rare and very interesting Saltglaze dog bowl. The rim with applied running dogs and acanthus leaves, is inscribed below William Hobson, Taylor January 23 1860. Probably when he acquired his dog. William is listed as a Taylor of Town end, in a number of directories including 1857 Whites History and 1881 Kelly's directory.
But what makes this even more interesting is the inscription to the base....J. Bradshaw Codnor Park Pottery. This being the "Bourne's" Pottery well known for the production of Stoneware although I have never seen the Codnor Park title on anything other than bottles.
The Bourne pottery had been set up in 1809 by Mr Jager, but got its name through William Bourne (1812-30) and Joseph Bourne (1833-60) it later became The Denby Pottery. Now who was J. Bradshaw did he take over the pottery for a short period, was he related to the Bradshaw's of The Burton-in-Longsdale Pottery.

17 cm in diameter.
Minor restoration to hairline around rim.
