Davenport (Cyril, 1848-1941 ) Portrait of Constance Georgina Davenport, the artist's wife, watercolour over pencil, extensively heightened with gum-arabic, on linen-backed paper over a wooden stretcher.
This stunning watercolour represents a moment in our history England no longer looked back on the classics. But comfortable in the new Victorian age, We had India (represented by the ivory box) and looking forward to the opening of the new Asia, China the blue & white vase on the table and Japan the plate on the wall were both now keenly collected and studied in England, but we were still interested in our own history, the timber framed building in the picture.
Born in Stirling, Scotland on 5 Jun 1848 to Charles Edgecumbe DAVENPORT and Emma Anne Georgiana Webber. Cyril James Davenport had 2 children. He died in St.Lenards Sussex
He was Assistant to the Keeper of Printed Books, British Museum. Cantor Lecturer on Decorative Bookbindings, Society of Arts. Author of Royal English Bookbindings ; English Embroidered Bookbinding; History of the Book etc.
