An incredibly fine early white Quaker darning sampler, that eco's the white cotton dresses of Jane Austin's women. Worked at the important York Quaker School in 1805 by Rachel Jowitt.
Rachel born 5.5.1793, one of 10 children of John & Susannah Jowett of Leeds Yorkshire. She married fellow Quaker a cotton manufacture Joseph Crewdson 12.10.1815. They had 7 children, she died aged 35 in 1825.
York School had been founded by Ester Tuke in 1785 for the education of girls. Although she died in 1794 the school continued under the guidance of her daughters Ann & Mable who both had attended Ackworth.
