A delightful late 18th century creamware mug, transfer printed by Thomas Fletcher, Eng.Shelton. Although somewhat large for a Childs mug, its intensions are as such. Education on one side of the print with country dame's school, implying that good education leads to good trade on the other. Highlighted by the praiseworthy axioms...Employ time well if thou meanest to gain leisure; One to-day is worth two tomorrow & Since thoug art sure of a minute throw not away an hour.
Thomas Fletcher, originally from Lancaster had a number of adventures and partners , originaly a pot painter at Hanley Green , then potworks as an enameller in Hanley, Stafford. Followed by William Tittensor , 1794, Sampson Bagnall 1796 and then as a printer in partnership with Thomas Thompson & John Hewitt untill 1800. He died in 1807.
