  E C Mar 4. 1837 Small house sampler £150
It is always interesting to see what was going on , when our girls finish their samplers !. I must say I was amazed to find out that when E.C. finished her delightful small house sampler on the 24 march 1824 Black citizens were granted the right to vote in Canada. This I feel was so progressive, why did I not know this ? While the Slave Trade Act of 1807 outlawed the trade of enslaved people, it did not immediately end the institution of slavery itself. The Slavery Abolition Act of 1833, while freeing enslaved people, also included provisions that maintained a system of apprenticeship, effectively prolonging the period of forced labor in the British colony's. And this not ended in America until 1864. I know this is different from citizenship and that John London, a landlord, paid rates so could take part in Westminster byelection of 1747,despite being called a 'blackamoor' in, history of "people" is complicated with many strands running parallel or taking a different path. ?.
I love the way an object leads us down a road of discovery !.
Framed in a late 19th century period frame measuring 27 x 24 cm
