DEATH OF GENERAL WOLFE c.1776

£395

DEATH OF GENERAL WOLFE c.1776 £395
A large Creamware jug depicting the DEATH of WOLFE.
It is interesting that the Hero that was General Wolfe died taking Quebec City in 1759 and yet the commemorative pottery was not produced until much later !. In fact the original painting by Benjamin West was exhibited in 1771, and the print on which the jug is based was engraved by W.W.Woollett and published J. 1776.... they moved at a slower pace. The characters at his side include Robert Adair (holding his handkerchief to Wolf's heart), Captain Harvey Smith , Colonel Isaac Barre, Colonel Williamson & Lieutenant Henry Browne were not present at his death, but hay no need to spoil a good picture.
The reverse has a large sailing ship.
Height 26 cm.
Condition minor rim chip.
