IMPORTANT SEWELL "JAN DERKS" TEAPOT c.1810.

IMPORTANT SEWELL "JAN DERKS" TEAPOT c.1810. £145
An important "pearlware" teapot attributed to Sewell's of St.Anthony's pottery Newcastle.
I understand Joseph Sewell ordered a "Jan Derks" Stamp in 1808 to use on the products he shipped to the Netherlands. During those days Napoleon Bonaparte imposed his "Continental System" on the European continent, boycotting the English trade. Of course traders were still able to smuggle British wares to the Netherlands. Therefore they sold these Sewell wares as Dutch Delftware. Most likely Jan Derks was a Dutch trader indeed. During those days Delft potters also tried to copy creamware and pearlware. IT is interesting to see the Delft address AS Jan Derks operated mainly as a trader in Amsterdam and not Delft so confusing any one looking for him in relation to smuggled goods finding there way into Europe.
Chip To lid & end of spout.
