RARE PURSE THEORUM PAINTED by THE GREY NUNS of MONTERAL

£225

RARE PURSE THEORUM PAINTED by THE GREY NUNS of MONTERAL £225
A very rare and historically interesting purse decorated in the Theorem manor of painting on velvet, probably circa 1840. In near mint condition it retains a hand written card stating it came "from the Convent of the Grey Sisters at Montreal".
The congregation was founded in 1737 when Marguerite d'Youville and three of her friends formed a religious association to care for the poor. They rented a small house in Montreal on 30 October 1738, taking in a small number of destitute persons. The organisation grew but after 1840 the order rapidly expanded, and over the next 100 years became a major provider of health care and other social services throughout Quebec, Western and Northern Canada, and the northern United States.
We believe this small card case / purse was made by the sisters and sold to raise funds although have found no other examples !.
