Tim Bobbin was the nom-de-plume of John Collier (b.1708). John had to abandon hopes of an education when his father was blinded and was first apprenticed to a weaver but later became a teacher at Milnow, near Rochdale.
Collier, an invterate poet and writer, is today best known for his writings in the local lancashire dialect which he studied extensively. A view of the Lancashire Dialect; containing the adventures and Misfortunes of a Lancashire Clown by Tim Bobbin, which Collier publishes in 1750., takes the form of a comic dialogue between two people. Thomas & Mary, and also contains a glossary of Lancashire words and phrases that he collected over the years. |
