ELIZABETH FENNER born 1697 her Sampler 1716 Kent |
£395 |
A very rare and interesting very early 18th Century silk sampler on natural linen. Worked in traditional band format with the alphabet worked in a variety of styles or stitches. Interestingly the first few letters A to E are all worked in both upper and lower case letters. The A in all cases on this sampler worked with a flat top. After 3 sets we then have the sewers details ELIZABETH FENNER WAS BORN JANUARY THE 1 16997, followed by the date 1716 when she completed her sampler. We then have more letters of the alphabet AaBCD followed by pairs of initials AF EF AF IF EF & TF. These are usually her parents followed by grand parents initials although could also be brother and sisters. At the very bottom a uncompleted band of spot motifs and flame work patterns.
It is interesting although we have not been able to confirm this but there was an Elizabeth Fenner born in 1697 to Robert & Jane Fenner from Cobham.Kent.
Size 8 x 17 1/2 inches. 20 x 44.5 cm.
Condition good No stitch loss or colour run.
