A Yorkshire Double-Handled Eshaldwell Brewery Pearlware Pottery Mug, 1829, probably Swillington Bridge Pottery near Leeds, the cylindrical body printed and painted on one side with beer barrel, fruiting hops and a barley ear, on the other with four line verse ESHALDWELL BREWERY, IS KNOWN VERY WELL/FOR BREWING GOOD ALE NONE CAN IT EXCEL/PAY OFF YOUR OLD SCORES AND ORDER AGAIN/FOR I'M SURE OF THE ALE YOU CANNOT COMPLAIN, 1829, within floral sprays, with brown line detail and moulded basal horizontal ribbed band, 19cm high, 33.5cm wide across handles Mugs and beer jugs of this type are known and presumably come from the Woodlesford area in Yorkshire. It is probably that Bentley Eshaldwell Brewery in Aberford Road, Woodlesford, founded 1828, commissioned these vessels for advertising purposes and promoting the Brewery's ales. This brewery was absorbed by Whitbread Breweries in 1968, and was subsequently closed in 1972. |
