Some times, it is the more basic sampler that take us on exciting road. Elizabeth Dent Burra's sampler of 1850 does not reveal her background, as the daughter of William Burra a magistrate & banker in the City of London. Later (by 1871) they moved to Ashford , 16 East Hill where he became Justice of the Peace for Kent, while remaining a banker.
Although Ashford Grammar School had been founded in the 17th Century, and had its heyday in the l8th / 19th Century by the 1870s it was in decline, and it was decided to rebuild and expand. An Auction of the old property took place with James Burra (Our Elizabeth's brother providing £4000 to the fund for the new school) and our Elizabeth buying the old school for £620. The Hythe Road site was chosen and the school built with our Elizabeth laying the Foundation stone on 17.8.1878.
At the age of 40 Elizabeth married George John Blomfield, Rector of Aldington, and dean of North Lympne, (his first wife had died the year earlier leaving him with 10 children) They had an additional 3 daughters. He died in 1900 and our Elizabeth returned to London, she died aged 66 in 1907. |
