MARY SMITH, at ALTON-School in Hampshire in 1818. A very rare extract Quaker sampler following the style and tradition set up at Ackworth in Yorkshire.
Mary was born 24.oct.1806 Lawrence Hill in Bristol, one of four girls and two boys of George and Mary Smith whom soon moved to Stockton-on Tees in Country Durham. Where she met and married William Benington March 1829, her first born, a daughter was born April 1832 continued the family name being christened Mary (Ann). two sons William Henry (named after her brother) and George ( her fathers name) followed. Mary died at the young age of 36 on the 29th march 1843. But is now remembered by her sampler she worked at the age of 12 , what would she have thought of that?
