P of W CHAIR from St HELENA 1901

£sold

  P of W CHAIR from St HELENA 1901 £sold
A very rare and important piece of POW work, the largest single item we know of.
Signed across the top "Made by P of W St Henna 1901".
There were a number of camps set up on the Island for Boar prisoners of war between 1900 to 1902, the first at Deadwood, later Deadwood No.2, Broadbottom, Fort High Knoll and at Jamestown. Many Prisoners to relieve boredom, and earn pocket money for tobacco of food turned to make curios and trinkets including toys that could be sold. We have found only one other piece of furniture a smaller folding chair from a camp in Bermuda in 1902.
