RARE HATTERS POLITICAL JUG, dated 1810 |
£SOLD |
we may never know who W.J.Constantine was , who had this interesting jug made in 1810 , but I love the hand painted image on one side that has led left us a puzzle !
Across the top is written "We assist each other in times of need" And Across the Bottom "We Jolly Hatters Hanson for Ever", Manchester.
Now in 1810 Manchester was the center of the textile industry and, in that year there was considerable tension between the mill owners and spinners that resulted in the great Strike the following year. The jug shows a gentleman handing over a pledge to the seated worker , who is looking up his name on a list ! , in the background we have framed images of the Hatters, Glove makers, Wool merchants and the rabbit possibly representing the farriers ?. I think this jug is showing, to those in the know, that the trades are united , against the Mill owners. The other side as an image of Charity , they could all drink to her .
