A wonderful 19th century Brass bound leather trunk that can be dated to 1863. The top having its original copper name plaque for COL.STUART NEWALL C.B.
Born in Dumfriesshire Scotland in 1843, he commenced his colonial career in 1863, first in Victoria before traveling onto New Zealand where he had a distinguished career both as an engineer (road building and Gold mining) as well as military service in the Waikato & Titokowaru's wars.
He received the Queens medal with four clasps in 1891, and his C.B. in 1900. He died August 1919.
Trunk in original condition and retains its original key. |
