An interesting French Renaissance panel from the 16th century depicting a Woman holding a laurel reef, a representation of the story of Apollo & Daphne, when Apollo vowed to honor Daphne forever and used his powers of eternal youth and immortality to render the laurel tree evergreen. Apollo then crafted himself a wreath out of the laurel branches and turned Daphne into a cultural symbol for him and other poets and musicians, two of the great virtues of renaissance art.
24 x 36.5 cm.
Condition good small patch replaced in bottom area where the carving is very thin. old worm.
