A GEORGE IV NEEDLEWORK CHIPPING CAMPDEN SCHOOL SAMPLER BY MARY DRURY, worked with coloured silks on a fine gauze ground, with a virtuous text within a freehand meandering flower border, signed and dated 'Mary Drury aged ten years Campden School 1822', in a later glazed bird's eye maple frame. 32 x 37 cm
Mary was born May 1811 to Edward & Mary (1786-1819) Drury in neighbouring Weston Subedge, Gloucester a Beer Retailer, We believe she.married a Samuel Smith.
A charity school was set up in Chipping Campden in the early 18th Century by James Thynne, former MP for Cirencester. It later became a Blue Coat School intended to educate 30 poor Protestant girls from the village. In 1820 a new School was built on land gifted by Sir Gerald Noel for a broader selection of poor Campden girls. They were to be taught the Catechism, as well as to read, write sew & Knit , important in this wool producing area.
The verse is from John Gilbert Cooper's elegy, written in 1758.
