JOSHUA HAUGE, 1815 WATTTERLOO and so much more £tba
JOSHUA HAIGH, a Waterloo Man 16,17, & 18th June 1815 records the front of the jug.
Private Haigh is recorded at Waterloo with the 51st regiment of foot under Captain Peter Smellie but his story does not start their.
Previously he had been accused of the killing of Mr Horsfall, Sept 1812, one of the most notorious murders of the Luddite campaign ( The Luddites were a secret oath-based organisation of English textile workers in the 19th century, a radical faction which destroyed textile machinery). He had also been arrested for stealing for the cause (April 1812), And had been one of the men who destroyed the Machinery at Gatehead Mill where he was shot. At this time he had been enlisted in Huddersfield into the 51st Reg. It would appear that he managed to escape and fled to Ireland, where he was apprehended by a party of the 84th Regiment as a Deserter from the 51st and escorted to the army depot at Brabourne Lees Kent, where his Capt. "might may be authorized to shew him the proclamation in order that if he is in a situation to avail himself of the Royal Clemency he may impeach his accomplices".
More research is needed and who were John & Mary Woodhead ?.
