They say history is the record of men !, and that women under recorded, just one of the many reasons why samplers are so important giving us an insight to their often unrecorded or forgotten lives.
This interesting sampler apparently unfinished was worked by, in her own words...
Elisabeth Allen is my name and England my Nation and Petworth is my dwelling place and Christ my salvation in the year 1706. RA;AA;EA;SA;RAAA;IS.TA. (family initials) Below two Angles anointing Christ.
WE know Elizabeth married John Lickfold a Butcher of Petworth in 1707 (possibly the reason why she did not finish her sampler). John being baptized in 1687. His parents being John & Margaret. Interestingly John is also recorded as a Fellmonger, (one who removes hair or wool from hides in preparation for leather making.) We have found little about our Elizabeth !. |
