  ESTHER HOLLOWAY 1808-12 £.
From the Quaker School at Ackworth in Yorkshire a unique "style" of Samplers of four were developed. It would appear very few completed all four. Most started with what is unique to Quaker samplers a "Medallion" sampler with roundel's and hexagons of pattern often including a swan, passion flowers as well as geometric patterns. The girls would then complete a marking sampler with a short verse ,alphabet, numbers, and unique to Quakers Ligatures (two or more letters combined). This was occasionally substituted with a verse sampler both were worked in a Quaker Roman Alphabet. This was followed by one or two darning samplers first in colour then white on white in the finest cotton showing different styles of invisible mending.
Here we have a unique set by Ester Holloway from Bristol Somerset (parents Edith & James a wire worker from Frome), who first attended the Quaker meeting house in Bridgewater where she completed her "Medallion" sampler before moving to Sidcote School, where she worked her marking and daring samplers. The School having been set up in 1699 by William Jenkins in the small village of Sidcot, 1808 saw it moved for a short period to Yatton . Ester's parents possibly thought Bridgewater was a better option . Ester married James Willmot on 11.8.1829 an engineer in a cotton factory . They had 5 children.
