£1250 |
Well some samplers have it all, Martha has worked an exquisite sampler in very fine silks all within a floral meandering border.
A traditional alphabet in upper and lower case letters followed by a short verse presumably written by a Mr R. Balawant . We also have the classic animal motifs of a dog, cat and Lion, a central Basket of flowers a large church and a scene on the left a tree often called "Hieroglyphic of a Christian" a tree featuring the virtues of Christianity, such as love, hope, truth, peace etc. The trunk reading religion. Martha's interpretation of an engraving by J. Couse c.1780 after a painting by J.Bakewell. |
