A rare Victorian commemorative mug celebrating two of the great bridges of the industrial north of England
The Swing Bridge in Newcastle was built, completed and opened to traffic in 1876. It was designed to open up the river to larger ships and was the world's largest swing bridge at the time.
The Monkwearmouth Railway Bridge, also known as the Wearmouth Railway Bridge or Sunderland Railway Bridge, opened on August 3, 1879. Designed by Thomas Elliot Harrison, it provided the first direct railway link between Sunderland and Newcastle. At the time of its construction, it was considered the largest hogback iron girder bridge in the world.
