WALTER VERRALL Aged 11 1843 "BOY SAMPLER" £.
I have always been amased how rare sampler worked by boys are, and so always pleased to find one.
Walter Samuel Verrall tells us he was only 11 years when he completed his sampler in 1843 ( an important year with a publication of a report on child & education labor that inspired Charles Dickens, A Christmas Carol).
Born in 1832 to Mary & John Verrall a Blacksmith in Mayfield Sussex . He married quite late in life at 36 to Sarah Hobbs .He worked initialy as a shop worker then grocers assistant before having his own Shop . He died aged 71 in 1903.
He leaves us with a traditional sampler worked with the alphabet in both upper & lower case letters as well as numbers 1 to 15.
34 x 46 cm.
