  QUINCE & POMEGRANATE SLIPS, c.1660 £295  
A beautifully framed group of three 17th century needlework slips of the type often used on soft furnishings these probably from a bed hanging,. There symbolism often lost in todays world.
Two Pomegranate's . The The pomegranate is a sacred fruit , in Christian art in particular, it is a symbol of resurrection and eternal life: the seeds represent the community of the faithful (the Church) united in faith and hope in the resurrection; but it is also a symbol of the Passion of Christ, due to its blood-red color, which recalls the blood shed by the Redeemer. Generally important symbol of passion and resurrection, prosperity, abundance, and fertility.
The Quince symbolizes love, fertility, and marriage, stemming from Greek mythology where it was sacred to Aphrodite. This aromatic fruit represents the sweetness of lasting relationships, temptation & resurrection, (contrasting with the apple , which represents the fall of man), and domestic virtue.
