MARY TOWLER 1797 ROCKLAND NORFOLK

£575

MARY TOWLER 1797 ROCKLAND NORFOLK £575
No other county in England can say they produced such a range of needlework that all share a common thread as that of Norfolk, in particular, the city of Norwich as highlighted by Joanna Lukachers excellent book Imitation and Improvement : The Norfolk Sampler Tradition.
So we are pleased to be able to add Mary Towler to the list. Her sampler not only shares many of the traditional "Norfolk" features but also a dramatic band of images not previously seen, including a small red house, trees , flowers and a temple but also most dramatic image of the Madonna & Child seated between classical columns .
Mary is also I think unique in that she gives the location to her sampler as Rockland ( a tiny village known as Rockland All Saints a former civil parish, now in the parish of Rocklands, in the Breckland district to the south East of Norwich.)

Mary Towler was born born in Rockland and baptized 6.Feb.1786 making her 11 when she finished her sampler on 12.September 1797. Her parents Mary Ann & John Towler. She married John Warren 20.Oct.1807. They had 4 children, He is listed as an Agr. Labour.

Retains its original fruitwood frame measuring 36 x 46 cm.
This sampler does have a number of holes and some light discoloration consistent with its age and has now been rebacked onto acid free conservation card.
