Initially one would expect this beautiful sewing bag sampler to be the work of a young child, Caroline Mewis, of St.Michaels School Derby 1872. But no the story is more interesting.
Caroline was born in Derby the daughter of Charlotte & William Mewis a Shoe maker in 1853. In 1871 at the age of 18 she is listed as a Pupil teacher, so this was her teaching aid , to demonstrate stitching types, letter styles, hemming and button hole all on a piratical item. By 1881 she was an Elementary School teacher. In 1887 at the age of 34 she married Samuel Robotham a farmer and it appears she stopped teaching being a "farmers wife and mother of two children.
It would appear that the school was associated with St Michael's Church, Derby initially a medieval parish church with roots dating back before 1086. After its chancel collapsed on August 17, 1856, a new building designed by Henry Isaac Stevens was erected in 1857–1858. It closed in 1977. |
